GUITAR INVENTOR, LES PAUL DIED AT 94
U.S. guitar virtuoso and inventor, Les Paul, died at the age of 94, of complications from pneumonia, Thursday, August 13, 2009, White Plains, New York.
Paul was born Lester William Polfuss in Waukesha, Wis., on June 9, 1915. He started his career as musician who joined Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians in the mid part of 1930's. Later he moved to New York to from Les Paul Trio together with Jim Atkins and bassist Ernie Newton.
His success in his career made him to start of his own and his first records were released in 1944 to 1962 who earned him 36 gold records including the hits "Vaya Con Dios" and How High the Moon" that hits No. 1.
His work on recording techniques began in the years after World War II when Bing Crosby gave him a tape recorder. With his earlier experimentation in his homemade recording machine, Paul added an additional playback head to the recorder.
In 1954, Paul commissioned the first eight-tack tape recorder, known as "Sel-Sync," which a simultaneous record of new tract and play back previous ones.
In 1960's Paul retired from his music career to concentrate his inventions. And one of it was "Chester and Lester Album" that received a Grammy Award as the Best Country Instrumental Performance of 1976.
In 2005, he released the Grammy-winning "Les Paul & Friends: American Made, World Played." Peter Frampton, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Richie Sambora were among who played with him. He was inducted in the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2005.
In his last months, he released his very first rock album which invented four years ago in which until recently played every week at New York Jazz Club.
Henry Juskiewicz, Chairman and CEO of Gibson Guitar, which massively produced produced Paul's original invention said, "He was truly the cornerstone of popular music."
The first robot guitar invented by Xin Gibson which is an electric guitar not only keeps itself in tune even after changes of string but also allow players to access six nonstandard tunings at the push of a button. After 15 years of research, Gibson Robot Guitar is launching a limited edition Les Paul Robot Guitar next month.
